  Abstract

The evolution from classroom to online to mobile application of a language training website for developing basic communication skills in a foreign
language with a very broad user base is described. The structure and teaching principles of the classroomdeveloped approach is followed by a discussion of the adaptation of the training system to an online format, followed by a brief description of the hurdles being encountered as the mobile app evolves. Particular reference is made to the digital divide, which refers to the gap between those who have access to information technology and those who do not for various reasons, such as gender, income, age, education or physical location. Design measures taken to overcome such limitations in order to reach a wider audience are then described.
